Here you can find answers to the most common questions concerning the École Normale Supérieure, its trainings, admission procedures and academic life.

📋 Admissions & Competition

What are the conditions for access to ENS competitions?

Candidates must:

  • To hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree
  • Be under 26 years of age on 1 January of the year of the contest
  • Completing the medical conditions of education
  • For some competitions, have a speciality specific to the baccalaureate

When are the entrance exams going on?

The ENS entrance examinations generally take place:

  • Registrations : March - April
  • Written Tests : May - June
  • Written results: July
  • Oral Tests : July - August
  • Final results : September

The exact dates are published on our website and in the Official Journal.

What are the different competitions offered?

The ENS organises several competitions according to the specialties:

  • Letters and Human Sciences Competition
  • Exact Science Competition
  • Life and Earth Sciences Competition
  • Competition Living Languages
  • Math-Physical Competition
  • Philosophy Competition

🎓 Training & Diplomas

What is the duration of ENS training?

Initial ENS training lasts 2 years (4 semesters). This period includes:

  • Theoretical and practical courses
  • Educational placements in schools
  • Completion memory
  • Preparation for competitive examinations

At the end of the 2 years, students graduate from the ENS and are titularized as teachers.

What degrees does ENS deliver?

The ENS awards the following degrees:

  • ENS diploma (initial training of 2 years)
  • Master MEEF (Métiers de l'Enseignement, de l'Éducation et de la Formation)
  • Professional certifications continuing training
  • Certificates of training for short courses

Are training paid?

Yesstudents admitted to the ENS are entitled to trainee status and receive monthly remuneration throughout their training (2 years).

The amount varies by level of education and includes:

  • Basic treatment
  • Internship allowances
  • Support for registration fees

📚 Academic Life

What is the weekly hourly volume?

The average weekly volume is 25-30 hours, as follows:

  • Disciplinary courses: 15-20 hours
  • Educational and didactic: 5-8 hours
  • Directed and practical work: 5-8 hours
  • Internships in institutions: 2 days per week

In addition, personal work and the preparation of the memory are added.

How are training courses organised?

The pedagogical courses are progressive and structured:

  • Year 1 : Observation course (2 weeks) + Accompanied practice course (4 weeks)
  • Year 2 : Internship in charge (8 weeks) with full class support
  • All internships are supervised by a tutor from the ENS and a teacher in the host institution
  • Internship report and support required

What are the evaluation modalities?

Evaluation is ongoing and includes:

  • Written and oral checks in each discipline
  • Assessment of teaching skills
  • Internship reports and visits by pedagogical advisers
  • End of study memory and defence
  • Participation and attendance in courses

The validation of each semester is necessary to move to the next.

What are the opportunities after ENS?

NSS graduates have several opportunities:

  • Secondary education : Certified teacher in colleges and high schools
  • Higher education : After further studies (master, PhD)
  • Educational supervision : Inspector, teacher adviser, head of school
  • Research : In educational laboratories and research centres
  • School administration : In educational and ministerial services

Is tenure automatic?

Yes, the tenure as a national education official is automatic for students who:

  • Validated the 4 semesters of training
  • Obtained the ENS diploma
  • Successful completion of professional tests
  • Beneficiary of a favourable opinion of the end-of-training panel

Graduates are assigned to a school according to the needs of the ministry and their exit ranking.

Can you continue your studies after ENS?

Absolutely.. There are several opportunities for graduates:

  • Master Research in its original discipline
  • Doctorate for a career in research and higher education
  • Further training in school administration, guidance, etc.
  • Preparation for aggregation to teach in preparatory classes and university
  • Training abroad through ENS international partnerships
